Project Background
Anxiety disorders substantially reduce quality of life in approximately one in ten older adults. Despite this burden, older adults are less likely to receive treatment compared to individuals aged 18–65. Older adults show a preference for non-pharmacological interventions delivered within primary care.

Exposure therapy is a highly effective treatment for anxiety disorders, with demonstrated efficacy across cultural, ethnic, and educational backgrounds. However, empirical evidence regarding its effectiveness in older adults is limited, and its implementation in general practice has not yet been evaluated.

This study examines the (cost-)effectiveness of exposure therapy delivered by mental health nurses in primary care compared to usual care for older adults with anxiety disorders. Primary outcomes include reduction in anxiety symptoms and improvement in quality of life, with the broader aim of reducing disease burden and healthcare utilization.
