Studying how individuals process language using eye-tracking
Short title: Studying how individuals process language using eye-tracking
Department: Psychological Methods; Brain and Cognition
Summary: In this project, we would like to study how individuals process quantity words (e.g., more than half, most) using eye-tracking. This is an interdisciplinary project: you will work together with experts on semantics, eye-tracking and psychological methods.
Aim of the study: In experimental semantics and psycholinguistics, there exist numerous theories on how individuals perceive and process words. However, the potential of eye-tracking data to inform these theories has been largely underappreciated. In this project, you will review the literature on experimental semantics, and collect and analyze eye-tracking data to potentially different processing strategies across individuals. If you have an affinity to Bayesian statistics, you can additionally fit a Bayesian cognitive model to the behavioral data.
Start date: January (thesis); February (internship)
End date: June/July
Internship or Thesis: both
Duties: Design + execute the study, collection of eye-tracking data, analyzing eye-tracking data
Requirements: Some familiarity with eye-tracking data is preferred, enthusiasm for psycholinguistics.
