In the MultiCUE project (www.multicue.nl) we investigate differences between multilingual and monolingual children in their understanding of non-verbal cues, such as the speakers’ gestures and eye gaze. In this project, you will investigate whether there are differences between multilingual and monolingual children (ages 4-6 years) regarding gesture comprehension in different conditions: (1) a gesture presented in isolation, or gestures that are accompanied with (2) reinforcing speech (containing the same information as the gesture), (3) supplementary speech (containing different, but complementary information to the gesture) and (4) conflicting speech (containing information that conflicts with the gesture).

Within this project, your activities could include:

  • Testing 4-6 year old children in Dutch
  • Contacting schools
  • Coding the types of errors children make on productive vocabulary tasks
  • Attending weekly project meetings
  • Finding and summarizing literature
  • Analyzing and visualizing data in R

For this project, speaking proficiency in Dutch (B2 or higher) is required.
